Shen Yun Performing Arts
Shen Yun Performing Arts is a distinguished New York-based nonprofit performing arts organization, celebrated for its large-scale theatrical productions that blend classical Chinese dance with live orchestral music. Founded in 2006, the company has gained international acclaim for its commitment to reviving traditional Chinese culture, often referred to as 'China Before Communism.' Each performance features approximately 20 independent vignettes that vividly depict ancient Chinese history, folklore, and cultural narratives.
In the vibrant city of Chicago, the performances take place at the historic Lyric Opera House - IL, a venue known for its exceptional acoustics and elegant architecture. This theater provides an ideal setting for the immersive experience that Shen Yun Performing Arts offers. The innovative digital backdrop technology enhances the storytelling by creating animated environments that interact seamlessly with the live performers, while the elaborate hand-crafted costumes transport audiences to different eras of Chinese history.
The live orchestra accompanying each performance is a unique blend of Eastern instruments, such as the erhu and pipa, alongside traditional Western symphonic instruments. This fusion creates a rich auditory experience that complements the stunning visual elements of the show. With approximately 480 performers across eight global touring companies, Shen Yun delivers a dynamic and energetic performance that captivates audiences of all ages.
The duration of each show is approximately two hours, including one intermission, allowing ample time for audiences to absorb the artistry and cultural significance presented on stage. The experience is designed to be accessible to all, with ADA accommodations available at most venues.
Attendees are encouraged to embrace a smart casual to formal dress code, enhancing the theatrical ambiance of the evening. Additionally, merchandise such as DVDs and books related to Shen Yun Performing Arts is available in the lobby, providing an opportunity for guests to take a piece of this cultural journey home.
